Study in Poland 2026: B2 English Rule, NAWA Statement, Entrance Exam

Since July 2025 every non-EU applicant to Poland needs a listed B2 certificate; most also need a NAWA statement and an entrance exam. Who needs what, by country.

Poland did not close to international students in 2025. It added up to three documents, and most of the people who fail now fail on the order they get them in.

Poland is the cheapest serious European route on our cost table for a family that wants an English-taught degree: public tuition about $2,240 to $5,380 a year for most subjects, a careful first year about $7,000, priced in detail here. Then, from 1 July 2025, the Act of 4 April 2025 changed who can be admitted and on what paper. This article explains the three requirements, who each applies to by country of certificate, how long each takes, and the order that gets the consular appointment in before the semester. Nigeria and India appear as labelled worked examples because their consulates run differently. Figures were checked at the end of October 2026.

The figures that matter

  • B2 in the language of instruction for every non-EU applicant: IELTS 5.5, TOEFL iBT 72, PTE Academic 59 or another document from the ministry’s list. No national school certificate is on it, from any country.
  • A NAWA statement for a school certificate from outside the EU, EFTA and OECD, and for such a degree if you are applying for a master. Free, online, allow up to 60 days.
  • An entrance exam at the university for every bachelor applicant in that same group. This one is new and almost nobody mentions it.
  • PLN 1,010 a month is the statutory living figure, about $3,700 for the year with return funds, plus your housing cost.
  • Six months to fifteen days before travel is the visa window. Decision in 15 days as a rule, up to 30. Fees differ by consulate and are not refunded.

What changed in July 2025, in one paragraph

The Act of 4 April 2025 was written to clean up Poland’s visa system, and three of its provisions land on students. A non-EU foreigner admitted on a document issued abroad must prove the language of instruction at B2, and from 1 August 2025 only the documents in the regulation of 30 July 2025 count. The eligibility check on a foreign secondary certificate moved from the regional education superintendent to NAWA, which issues a written statement through its SYRENA system. And bachelor applicants whose certificate does not entitle them to apply directly must pass a university entrance exam. Nothing in the Act touches tuition.

Which rules apply to you: a sorting table

What decides which rules you face is where your certificate was issued, not your passport.

Your certificate was issued inB2 proofNAWA statementEntrance exam (bachelor)Legalisation
An EU, EEA or EFTA country, as a non-EU citizenYesNoNoApostille
Another OECD country: United States, Canada, Britain, Australia, Japan, Korea, Türkiye, Mexico, Chile, Colombia, IsraelYesNoNoApostille

India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Indonesia, South Africa, Rwanda, SenegalYesYesYesApostille (Hague Convention party)
Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Egypt, Ethiopia, Uganda, Nepal, Sri LankaYesYesYesEmbassy legalisation, two steps

Two surprises in that table. An American or British school leaver still needs a listed English test, because no national school certificate is on the regulation’s list. And Pakistani and Bangladeshi applicants now get an apostille rather than embassy legalisation, since both joined the Hague Convention recently; Vietnam follows in September 2026.

Step one: the B2 certificate

Start here, because it has the longest lead time and you control it completely.

DocumentMinimum for B2Notes
IELTS (Academic or General)5.5 overallThe most common choice. Universities may ask for more; Lodz gives IELTS 6.0 as its example of B2.
TOEFL iBT72Listed in the regulation at this score; a university may set a higher one.
PTE Academic59On-site or online version both count.
Cambridge B2 First, C1 Advanced, C2 ProficiencyPass at the stated levelListed by name in the regulation.
LanguageCert, Trinity ISE II, TOEIC, telc, ECL, LCCIB2 or the listed scoreTOEIC needs 785 in Listening and Reading plus 150 Speaking and 160 Writing.
IB or European BaccalaureateDiploma, English as the primary or L1/L2 languageThe only secondary-level documents on the list.
A degree taught in EnglishDiploma or supplement must state the language of instructionFor master applicants. Many diplomas do not say this, so you need a supplement or a certificate from your university confirming it, and the Polish university decides whether to accept it.

Two things are not on the list. A national school certificate, however good the English grade: not a WAEC or NECO result, not an Indian CBSE or state board certificate, not a US high school diploma, not British A levels. Neither is Duolingo. The certificate must cover all four skills. A medium-of-instruction letter is not enough for a bachelor applicant, because that route exists only for a completed degree; for a master it can carry you, with the university’s acceptance in writing.

Step two: the NAWA recognition statement

Poland recognises secondary certificates from EU, EFTA and OECD countries by law, and from Ukraine and China by agreement. A certificate from anywhere else does not by itself entitle you to apply. Since 1 July 2025 the fix is a statement from the Director of NAWA; an older kurator oświaty decision counts only if the proceedings began by 30 June 2025.

The statement is a free, digitally signed PDF, in Polish, saying your certificate entitles you to apply for first-cycle or long-cycle studies. You apply through SYRENA, NAWA’s online system, with colour scans of no more than 3 MB each; NAWA says scans need no legalisation and no translation when the originals are in English. The file is the certificate and your passport.

How long it takes is the unknown. NAWA issues statements in the order complete files arrive; the University of Rzeszów tells applicants to allow up to 60 days. Universities will not finalise an admission without it, so sixty days here is sixty days off your runway. Apply the day your certificate is in hand.

For a master, the same rule, a different form. A degree from a non-EU, non-OECD country that has not been nostrified also needs a NAWA statement, a separate application in SYRENA, before admission to second-cycle studies. The entrance exam applies to bachelor and long-cycle admission only; for a master the B2 proof and the statement are the two gates.

Step three: the entrance exam

This is the one the agents leave out. A foreigner admitted to a bachelor or long-cycle master with a school certificate that does not entitle them to apply directly must pass an entrance exam. The university sets it. Ask for the date and form when you ask about deadlines, and whether it can be sat from your country, because an in-person exam before the visa closes the route.

Step four: legalisation of the paper originals

SYRENA takes scans. The consulate and the university take legalised originals, and the chain depends on whether your country is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention.

Apostille countries. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Indonesia, South Africa, the United States, Canada and most of Europe and Latin America. One stamp from the designated authority replaces embassy legalisation; New Delhi, for example, wants Indian documents authenticated by the state Regional Authentication Centre and then apostilled by the Ministry of External Affairs.

Non-apostille countries. Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Egypt, Ethiopia, Uganda, Nepal and Sri Lanka, among others. The chain is authentication by the home foreign ministry, then legalisation by the Polish consul. Abuja charges €40 a document, about $45, by appointment, will not legalise a photocopy, and refuses a document that has skipped the home step.

Start the chain the week your certificate is issued, because the originals are also needed for the in-person submission Polish universities require; Lodz takes them on two days in late September. The eighteen-month timeline shows where this sits, and our proof-of-funds comparison covers the money.

The consular appointment: same system, different queues

Every Polish consulate takes registrations on e-Konsulat. What differs is how appointments are handed out, and that decides your timeline.

Worked example, India. The New Delhi embassy releases slots on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10:00 and fills them in order of registration; the Mumbai consulate releases every two weeks on a Wednesday at 10:30. The application is lodged in person at a VFS centre after a separate VFS online form. The decision is due within 15 days, extended to 30 in justified cases.

Worked example, Nigeria. The Abuja embassy does not run a first-come calendar. Appointments are allocated by automated drawing; a registration that is not drawn stays in the pool for the following draws, and a date once given cannot be changed. The embassy says it does not work with agents. Register only when the admission letter is in hand, because the data you enter is checked against your documents. Add the draw, which is outside your control, and the window from admission letter to passport back is two to three months. The fee at Abuja is €200 in cash, about $225, not refunded on refusal.

Two money figures, one evidence file. Consular checklists often show a lower monthly figure; Abuja lists PLN 776 a month plus accommodation plus PLN 2,500 for the return journey, PLN 9,312 for a year. The statutory living figure that voivodeship offices apply to the residence permit is PLN 1,010 a month plus housing plus PLN 2,500, PLN 14,620 for twelve months before rent, about $3,700. Bring statements that cover the higher figure, so the same evidence serves the residence permit after you arrive. Accepted proof at Abuja is a six-month bank statement, a certificate from a bank in Poland, a consul-confirmed sponsorship letter from a family member, or a scholarship letter; other consulates publish their own lists.

What the visit costs, wherever you apply

  • The visa fee, set per consulate and published on its consular fees page. Not refunded on refusal.
  • Travel medical insurance of at least €30,000 for the whole stay.
  • Originals only: the admission letter, proof of any fee paid, accommodation for the full visa period showing the rent, the legalised certificates, the English certificate, the NAWA statement where required, and a return flight reservation.

Pay only the deposit the admission letter needs until the visa is in the passport; the consulate does not mediate refunds after a refusal.

The order that works

  1. Twelve months out, October. Sit IELTS, TOEFL or PTE. Request the certificate itself if you only hold a statement of result. Shortlist five programmes and ask each admissions office the non-EU deadline and the entrance exam format.
  2. Ten months out, December. If your certificate is from outside the EU, EFTA and OECD, open the SYRENA application the day it arrives. Start the apostille or the home authentication of the originals the same week.
  3. Eight months out, February. Apply with the English certificate and the NAWA statement, or ask in writing whether the university will process the application while the statement is pending. Sit the entrance exam when scheduled.
  4. Six months out, April. Admission letter in hand. Finish legalisation, register on e-Konsulat, and get the money to PLN 14,620 plus your rent in a statement you can explain.
  5. Four months out, June. Appointment. Decision in 15 to 30 days. Book flights after the visa.
  6. October. Arrive, submit originals, file the residence permit before the visa runs out.

Banach is the funded version of this route. NAWA pays public university tuition, PLN 2,500 a month and a travel allowance for a master, names applicants from outside Europe explicitly, and asks for the same B2 certificate, so the order above serves both. Our scholarship calendar has the dates. To see whether the Polish route is open to you now, the Route Finder weighs it against thirty four other countries in about four minutes.

Questions this article answers

What are the requirements to study in Poland for international students?
Since July 2025, every non-EU applicant admitted on a foreign certificate must prove B2 in the language of instruction with a document from the ministry's list, for English IELTS 5.5, TOEFL iBT 72, PTE Academic 59 or a listed Cambridge, LanguageCert, Trinity or TOEIC result. Applicants whose school certificate comes from outside the EU, EFTA and OECD, and not from Ukraine or China, also need a NAWA recognition statement and, for a bachelor, must pass a university entrance exam. Then the visa: admission letter, funds, accommodation, insurance and legalised originals.
Does a school certificate from an English-speaking country count as B2?
No. The regulation of 30 July 2025 lists the accepted documents, and no national school certificate is among them, whether from the United States, Nigeria, India, the Philippines or Britain. Only the International Baccalaureate and European Baccalaureate count at secondary level. For a master, a degree taught in English counts if the diploma or a supplement states the language of instruction, and the university accepts it.
Who needs a NAWA recognition statement?
Bachelor applicants whose secondary certificate was issued outside the EU, EFTA and OECD and is not covered by an agreement, which in practice means most of Africa and South and South East Asia. Master applicants whose degree comes from such a country and has not been nostrified need the separate statement for higher education diplomas. It is free, online through SYRENA, and the University of Rzeszów tells applicants to allow up to 60 days. Certificates from the United States, Canada, Britain, Australia, Japan, Korea, Türkiye and Mexico entitle you to apply directly, so no statement and no exam.
How much money do I need to show for a Polish student visa?
The statutory living figure applied by residence permit offices is PLN 1,010 a month plus your documented housing, plus PLN 2,500 for the return journey from outside the EU: PLN 14,620 for twelve months before rent, about $3,700. Consulates publish their own, often lower, checklist figures. Bring statements that cover the higher one so the same evidence serves the residence permit after you arrive.
How do I get a Polish visa appointment?
Every Polish consulate uses the e-Konsulat system, but the allocation differs. New Delhi and Mumbai release slots on fixed mornings and fill them in order of registration, with submission at a VFS centre. Abuja allocates study appointments by automated draw and the date cannot be changed. You can apply up to six months before travel and no later than fifteen days before. Decisions on student visas take 15 days as a rule, up to 30.
